Tuesday
O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you As the day rises to meet the sun. Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Come, let us bow down and bend the knee : let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Save us, Lord, but not us alone : redeem your whole creation. Psalm 71:1-3, 9-12 1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be ashamed 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free : incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock of refuge, a castle to keep me safe : you are my crag and my stronghold. 9 Do not cast me away in my old age : forsake me not when my strength fails. 10 For my enemies are talking against me; and those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together. 11 They say, “God has forsaken him; go after him and seize him : for there is none who will save." 12 O God, be not far from me : come quickly to help me, O my God. Save us, Lord, but not us alone : redeem your whole creation. Old Testament reading | Isaiah 49:1-6 1 Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.” 4 But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand, and my reward is with my God.” 5 And now the Lord says-- he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord and my God has been my strength-- 6 he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” New Testament Gospel reading | Mark 11:15-19 15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers. ” 18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city. Save us, Lord, but not us alone : redeem your whole creation. Fourteenth-century anchorite Julian of Norwich wrote, "I often wondered why, through the great pescient wisdom of God, the beginning of sin was not prevented. For then it seemed to me that would have been well. I mourned and I sorrowed on this account, unreasonably, lacking discretion. But Jesus answered me with these words and said: Sin is necessary, but all will be well, and all will be well, and every kind of things will be well." Prayers for others Our Father (Lord's Prayer) Savior of the word, save us from our sin, our sadness, and our self-deception. Give us courage to live in a world we cannot fix with hope that it has already been redeemed. Amen. May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : Wherever he may send you : May he guide you through the wilderness : Protect you through the storm : May he bring you home rejoicing : At the wonders he has shown you : May he bring you home rejoicing : Once again into our doors. |
