Scripture from Matthew 16:17-19 (NLT) 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” |
Did you know that Peter’s original name was Simon? It was Jesus who gave him the name Peter. Peter means “rock.” In Jesus’ day, names were significant because they meant something about who you were. They spoke to your identity. When Jesus renamed Simon to Peter, he was telling him who Peter was going to be for Him: someone who was solid and whose faith wouldn’t be moved. Of course, it took a couple of years, but Peter became the person Jesus called him to be. |
Look at the image of the rock, and ask Jesus this question: “Lord, who is it that you want me to be? How can I have a solid foundation of faith in Jesus?” Pray that God will speak to you—if not this very moment, someday soon. Reflection for Kids
